How Much Does Roll-On Lawn Cost in Cape Town?

Top Trimmers doesn't have a set price for roll-on lawn: every lawn is quoted per job, from photos or a visit, because the size, the grass and the ground underneath all change the cost. Here's what goes into the price.

Most people asking what roll-on lawn costs are looking at a patchy, sandy or worn-out lawn and wondering whether starting again is worth it. The honest answer is that it depends on your garden, and we'd rather tell you what drives the price than give you a number that won't match your quote.

Top Trimmers lays kikuyu and LM Berea roll-on lawn, and we price every lawn per job, from photos or a look at the garden. Taking the old grass and waste away is R450 per load on our large trailer when it isn't already in the price. Quotes are free.

How much does it cost to install turf grass?

It depends on how big the lawn is, which grass you choose and how much work the ground needs before a single roll goes down. That's why we don't publish a price per square metre: two lawns of the same size can need very different amounts of preparation. Send us photos and the rough size of the area, and you'll have a free quote within 24 hours.

What a new lawn from us involves

  • Clearing the area of old grass, weeds and debris.
  • Preparing the soil, so the new roots have something to grow into.
  • Levelling and grading the ground so water drains away instead of pooling.
  • Laying the rolls for even coverage and a lawn that roots well.
  • Taking the waste away at R450 a load, or already in the price on some jobs. Ask which applies to yours.
  • Putting right anything that isn't. If there are any issues, we're happy to come back and fix them.

Getting the ground ready is a big part of the job, and of the price.

What moves the price of a new lawn

  • Size. The more square metres, the more grass and the more hours of laying.
  • The grass you choose. Kikuyu and LM Berea are priced differently. If you're not sure which suits your garden, ask us to quote both.
  • The ground underneath. Much of the northern suburbs sits on fast-draining, alkaline sand, while the hills around Durbanville have clay soils that hold winter moisture. Either way the soil usually needs work before a new lawn will take, and more work means a higher price.
  • What has to come out first. Lifting an old lawn, digging out weeds or clearing rubble adds time, and the waste is R450 a load to take away.
  • Access. Rolls of lawn are heavy. If every one has to be carried through the house or down a narrow side passage, the job takes longer.
  • Irrigation. If you want a system put in under the new lawn, our irrigation expert quotes it with the job.

Kikuyu or LM Berea: which costs less to live with?

The price on the day isn't the only cost. The grass you pick decides how much looking after the lawn needs for years afterwards.

From a Cape Town lawn supplier's guide. Ask us which suits your garden.
KikuyuLM Berea
Sun or shadeFull sunCopes with shade
WearTough under heavy foot trafficHandles moderate use
MowingNeeds regular mowingNeeds little mowing
Good to knowCan spread into bedsGrows slowly and needs little feeding

Kikuyu wants full sun, so it's the wrong choice for a shady garden, and a struggling lawn costs money to fix. Pick the grass that suits your sun and how you use the lawn, and you're less likely to pay for patching later.

After the lawn goes down: costs to plan for

  • Getting the ground ready. A quote for grass only may not include clearing and preparing the soil. Ask what's in it.
  • Taking the old lawn away. Lifted grass and soil take up a lot of space. With us it's R450 a load when it isn't already in the price.
  • Water. A new lawn needs regular watering while it roots. The City's permanent rules allow garden watering only before 9am or after 6pm, and a hosepipe needs a trigger nozzle.
  • Mowing. Once the lawn takes, it needs cutting. Our garden service starts from R200 for a small garden.

Getting a good lawn for less

  • Measure the area. Send the rough length and width with your photos, so we can price the lawn properly from the start.
  • Pick the grass for the spot. Kikuyu for sun and wear, LM Berea for shade. A lawn that suits its spot needs less fixing later.
  • Do it all at once. If a tree or old paving has to go first, ask for it in the same quote, so the waste goes out in the same loads.
  • Water it properly. A new lawn that dries out in its first weeks may need patching, which costs more than the water would have.

One price for the whole lawn

Every lawn gets its own price. Tylor looks at your photos, or at the garden itself, and gives you one price for the job: preparing the ground, laying the grass you've chosen and taking the waste away if you want it gone. The quote is free and you'll have it within 24 hours of sending photos. You can pay by EFT or cash.

“Absolute pleasure having these guys work on our property. Had grass put in, palm tree and a few others removed, new paving done. Very pleased with outcome and the work put in.”

FAQ

Roll-on lawn cost questions

Do you have a price per square metre for roll-on lawn?

No. Top Trimmers quotes every roll-on lawn in Cape Town per job, because the ground underneath changes the cost as much as the size does. WhatsApp photos and the rough size of the area to 071 623 4949, and we'll reply with a price within 24 hours.

Is getting the ground ready part of a Top Trimmers lawn price?

Yes. Tylor gives one price for the whole lawn in Cape Town: clearing the old grass and weeds, preparing and levelling the soil so it drains, then laying the kikuyu or LM Berea you've chosen. The quote is free, so ask about anything else you'd like in it.

Which roll-on lawn needs less looking after?

LM Berea needs less mowing and feeding than kikuyu, but it grows slowly and suits moderate use. Kikuyu needs regular mowing and can spread into beds, but it takes heavy wear in full sun. Top Trimmers lays both in Cape Town and will help you pick from your photos.
