The first of three garden services that has actually done a thorough and professional service, constantly kept me informed of the changing times and dates due to difficulties with the taxi strike. My garden and pavement has never looked so neat and tidy! Friendly, kind and informative owners, please give them a try!

The job

What is tree felling?

Tree felling means cutting a tree down to the ground. In an open field you can drop a tree in one go, but in a Cape Town garden there's almost never room: there's a wall, a roof, a neighbour's garden or a power line in the way. So in a garden a tree is usually taken down in sections, from the outer branches inwards and from the top down, until only the trunk is left to cut low.

That's the job you see in the photo: the top of the tree is already off and the rest comes down piece by piece. Once the tree is down, Top Trimmers cuts it into manageable pieces, digs out the stump and clears the ground.

Felling is different from trimming or pruning, where the tree stays and only some of it is cut back. If a tree is simply too big, blocking light or hanging over the wall, trimming may be all it needs. If it's dead, in the wrong place or lifting your paving, felling is usually the better answer. Not sure which? Send us photos and we'll tell you honestly.

Tree work also makes a lot of waste. A single garden tree can fill a trailer with branches and logs. Top Trimmers loads it onto our large trailer and takes it away, at R450 a load, so you're not left with a pile in the driveway.

The problem

When a tree needs to come down

These are the usual reasons people call us about a tree. Some need felling, some only a trim.

01

Too close to the house or wall

Branches on the roof, roots pushing at a boundary wall or a trunk leaning towards the house.

Maybe a trim will do →
02

Roots lifting paving

Roots that crack a driveway, a path or a pool surround keep growing. Often the only fix is felling and digging the stump out.

Stump removal →
03

Dead or dying

A tree with no leaves in season, peeling bark or dead limbs gets weaker every winter. Better down on your terms than in a storm.

04

An invasive tree

Port Jackson and rooikrans are listed invasive species, and landowners are expected to control them. Felling and digging out is how it's done.

There's no set time for felling a tree: it depends on the size of the tree, where it stands and what's around it. Tylor will tell you how long your job will take when he quotes.

Your options

Trim it, fell it, or fell it and take the stump out?

OptionWhat happensChoose it when
Trim or pruneThe tree stays. Branches are cut back or thinned and the waste is taken away. The tree is healthy and in the right place, just too big or overhanging
Fell, stump leftThe tree comes down and the trunk is cut low. The stump stays in the ground. You want the tree gone but don't mind the stump, for now
Fell and dig out the stumpThe tree comes down and the stump is dug out, so the ground can be levelled, paved or planted.Roots are lifting paving, or you want to use the space again

Once the tree is down, a stump in the middle of a lawn or a bed is hard to work around, which is why Top Trimmers digs stumps out. A dug-out stump is heavy and awkward to get rid of yourself, so it goes onto our trailer with the rest of the waste.

Northern suburbs trees

Trees and tree rules in Cape Town's northern suburbs

What are some common trees found in Cape Town?

In gardens across Cape Town's northern suburbs you'll mostly meet planted trees such as pines, gums, oaks, syringas and palms. Near the coast, the original dune bush (Cape Flats Dune Strandveld) has its own indigenous trees, including milkwood, sea guarri and Cape camphor. And on open ground there's still plenty of Port Jackson and rooikrans, two invasive wattles that landowners are expected to control.

Check before you cut

Not every tree is yours to fell. A tree on the pavement or verge belongs to the City of Cape Town, even if it's right outside your gate, and it needs the City's written permission before anyone prunes or removes it. White milkwood is a protected tree, so cutting one needs a licence, even on private land. Our post on what permission you need to cut down a tree in Cape Town goes through every case.

FAQ

Tree felling questions

How much does it cost to fell a tree in Cape Town?

Tree felling with Top Trimmers usually starts from around R1,500 in Cape Town's northern suburbs. The final price depends on the size of the tree, how close it stands to walls, a roof or power lines, and whether you want the waste taken away, which is R450 per trailer load. Our tree felling cost guide has the full breakdown.

Do I need permission to cut down a tree in Cape Town?

For most trees in your own garden in Cape Town, no permit is usually needed. A tree on the pavement or verge belongs to the City and needs its written permission, and protected trees such as white milkwood need a licence. Read what permission you need to cut a tree before you book.

Can you come out for a storm-damaged tree?

Top Trimmers doesn't take emergency or storm call-outs in Cape Town. We book tree work as a normal job, Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm, and reply to every request within 24 hours. If a fallen tree is blocking a road or lying on power lines, call the City's emergency line first: 107 from a landline or 021 480 7700 from a cellphone.

What do you need from me for a tree felling quote?

Send Top Trimmers a few photos of the tree on WhatsApp, showing the whole tree and what's around it, plus your address. We'll come back to you within 24 hours with a price or a time to come and look, and the quote is free.
