Bothasig trees

Bothasig started life as the farm Bosmansdam, laid out as a township for tradespeople and renamed Bothasig in 1966. The municipality took the land over between 1961 and 1989, so many homes here date from the 1960s onwards, and some of the original prefab houses are still standing. Newer houses sit towards the Edgemead side.
Agents describe the typical Bothasig home as a three-bedroom house of about 130 square metres with a single garage, on a stand of around 600 square metres, a little bigger than Edgemead's average of about 500. The suburb covers 4.07 square kilometres north of Edgemead and east of Milnerton, and in 2011 its 3,735 households worked out at about 920 to the square kilometre, less tightly packed than Richwood's 1,250.
On the corner of Bosmansdam Road and Potsdam Road is the Bothasig Fynbos Nature Reserve, 10 hectares of Critically Endangered Cape Flats Sand Fynbos that the City is restoring. That fynbos grows mainly in deep, white, acidic sand, quite unlike the alkaline sand of the coastal dune bush around Table View and Parklands.
Even on a stand this size, there's usually a house, a garage or a boundary wall within reach of a falling tree. So we take it apart limb by limb, then cut the trunk low and dig out the stump so you can use the ground again. Everything goes onto our large trailer, at R450 a load. We've worked in Bothasig, home of Bothasig Football Club at Abe Sher Stadium, and it's about 12 minutes' drive from our Parklands base without traffic.
