Table View is named after its view of Table Mountain across the bay, and anyone who keeps a garden here knows the other side of that view: the wind. It's the same wind that makes Table View a well-known kitesurfing spot, and in summer the south-easter blows sand off the beds onto lawns, paths and paving.
Most gardens here sit on sandy, alkaline soil over limestone, the ground of the old coastal dune bush. Sand drains fast, so beds and lawns dry out quickly. Nearer the sea, at Little Bay, Dolphin Beach and Big Bay, salt spray adds to it. A solid wall isn't the best shelter either: a fence, trellis or hedge that lets some wind through causes less turbulence behind it and keeps salt off the plants.
Table View has also changed a lot since it grew in the 1970s. Developers have replaced many older houses with sectional title schemes, and simplexes and duplexes are popular. That means plenty of complex gardens and shared common areas, which suit a regular weekly, fortnightly or monthly visit rather than a big clean-up once a year.
