Edgemead gardens
Looking after a garden in Edgemead
Edgemead was planned as a garden city, one of several in South Africa after Pinelands, the first. It was developed in the 1970s as a Garden Cities suburb, laid out with cul-de-sacs, curved roads, footpaths and open spaces between the houses. It's still known for its trees and gardens.
That means many Edgemead gardens have had around 50 years to grow. One estate agent puts the average plot at about 500 m2, and gardens that age tend to be full of mature trees, long-established hedges and shrubs that have grown well past what the original owners planted. A garden like that needs regular cutting back far more than it needs starting again.
Before a tree comes out, there's one thing that's particular to Edgemead. The suburb's original title deeds barred removing trees without permission. Check your own title deed before you book a felling, and we'll happily trim or shape the tree instead if that's the better answer.

Rules that apply to your garden
- Your title deed: Edgemead's original title deeds barred removing trees without permission. Check yours before a tree comes down.
- Verge trees: a tree on the pavement outside your home is on City land. The City of Cape Town says such trees stay City property and need its written approval before anyone prunes or removes them. See what permission you need to cut a tree.
- Watering: under the City's Water By-law, water only before 9am or after 6pm. See the City's Think Water page.
- Taking garden waste yourself: check which site and how many loads the City allows on its drop-off facilities page. Or let us take it on our trailer, at R450 a load.
