Most people asking what garden maintenance costs want two things: a number, and some idea of what they get for it. Here are both, for a regular or once-off garden service from Top Trimmers.

Every price below is a starting point. We confirm it from photos or a look at the garden, and a garden that's been left to grow wild may need a once-off clean-up first. Quotes are free.

How much does it cost for someone to do your garden?

With us in Cape Town's northern suburbs, from R200 for a small garden, R300 for a medium one and R500 for a large one. Where your garden lands depends on its size, the state it's in and what you want done, and the free quote gives you the price before we start.

You can book us weekly, fortnightly, monthly or once-off. Tell us which when you ask for a price, because it's one of the things Tylor needs to quote.

What you get on a service visit

  • Mowing the lawn.
  • Edging, so the lawn stops at a clean line along paths, beds and paving.
  • Cleaning the flower beds.
  • Light pruning of shrubs and small trees. Bigger tree work is tree trimming, quoted on its own.
  • Taking the garden waste away once the service is done, so you're not left with bags of clippings.
  • A return visit if something's wrong. If there are any issues, we're happy to come back and put them right.

Why one garden costs more than another

  • Size. A bigger garden takes the team longer, which is why small, medium and large gardens are priced differently.
  • The state it's in. A garden that's had regular care is quick to keep neat. One that's been left for months needs a clean-up first, and that may carry a once-off fee.
  • What you want done. Mowing, edging, beds and light pruning are the service. Felling a tree, laying a new lawn or spraying weeds are separate jobs with their own price.
  • How much waste there is. A normal visit's clippings go with us. A big first clean-up can fill a trailer, and at R450 a load that adds up.
  • How often we come. Weekly, fortnightly, monthly or once-off, so tell us which when you ask for a quote.

Why might the first visit cost more?

Because the first visit often does a different job. If the lawn is knee high, the beds are full of weeds and the hedges are over the path, the team spends that visit getting the garden back under control. After that, keeping it neat is quicker, and the price settles at the regular rate.

A garden in this state usually needs a once-off clean-up before regular visits start.

Whether you'll pay a clean-up fee, and how much, depends on the state of the garden. Tylor will tell you from your photos.

Extras to ask about before you book

  • The first clean-up. If your garden has been left for a while, ask whether the first visit costs more than the regular price.
  • Waste. Ask whether the clippings and branches leave with the team or stay in your bin. With us, the garden waste from a service goes on our trailer.
  • Extra jobs on the day. A tree that needs cutting back or weeds in the paving are separate jobs. Ask for them in the same quote and you'll know the full cost up front.

Ways to pay less for a tidy garden

  • Don't let it get away from you. Regular visits keep the garden easy to look after and avoid a second clean-up fee.
  • Bundle the extras. If you also want weeds sprayed or a hedge cut back, ask for it in the same quote.
  • Clear the way. Move toys, pots and garden furniture off the lawn before the team arrives, so the work can start straight away.
  • Show us every corner. Photos of the front, back and sides mean nothing gets left out of the price.

How we work out your price

Tylor looks at your photos, or at the garden itself, and prices it by its size and the state it's in, for how often you want us. The quote is free, and you'll have a reply within 24 hours of sending photos. You can pay by EFT or cash.

We look after homes across the northern suburbs, and bigger grounds too: Garden Cities and MyCiti are two of our biggest current clients. For estates, complexes, churches and businesses we quote per job, from photos or a visit.

“Tylor and his Team at Top Trimmers are absolutely outstanding in delivering above-expectation, great-value garden services that would leave you wanting them to come back time and time again!”

What to send us for a quote

Tylor prices a garden service from what he can see, so the more of the garden he gets, the better. WhatsApp these to 071 623 4949:

  • A photo of each part of the garden you want done: front, back and sides
  • A close-up of anything overgrown: long grass, full beds, hedges over the path
  • Your address
  • How often you want us: weekly, fortnightly, monthly or once-off
  • Anything extra, like a tree to cut back or weeds in the paving
